I truly cannot think of more fun couples photos to celebrate your summer engagement than at the state fair, your local county fair, or even that random pop-up carnival in town.
As a documentary-style photographer, I’m constantly nudging my couples to lean into something that feels more like a date night than an “engagement photoshoot.” Because honestly…what’s more fun than sticky cotton candy, perfectly made lemon shake-ups, and losing all your money on wildly rigged carnival games?
So if you’re here looking for state fair engagement photos, planning your own carnival engagement photos, or just trying to find unique engagement photo ideas that don’t feel overdone…you’re in the right place.

Something I hear often from couples once they book is how nervous they are about “looking awkward” (fair, we all have that fear!). And to that I say, that’s what makes activities during your photoshoots even more important!
When you’re doing something that you are enjoying, you’re not thinking about “what do I do with my hands” or “don’t look awkward”, “smile bigger”.
You’re no longer just standing in front of the camera and posing. You’re walking, laughing, eating, riding rides or mildly embarrassing yourself when a kid younger than you kicks your butt at ring toss games. And all of those moments are what create that beautiful, candid look that everyone on Pinterest and Instagram rave about.

We also can’t forget about how nostalgic the fair is? If you’re anything like me, your inner kid comes out immediately after you scan your ticket to get in. Suddenly you’re not thinking about anything other than deep fried oreos, where the ticket booth is for rides, and which games you’re going to try to win to get that extra-large stuffy.
So, if you’re leaning towards playful couples photos or a fun summer engagement session that can truly capture your personality—the fair is the perfect spot!

Check the fair or carnival schedule wayyy ahead of time!
I’m not kidding when I say that one of the biggest bummers is getting an inquiry from a couple I know I’d vibe with…only to realize I’m already booked that day.
Most county and state fairs run from late June through early September, which also happens to be one of the business seasons for summer engagement photos and weddings.
So if this is something you’re even thinking about, reach out early. Like, earlier than you think you need to.
P.S. If you can, go on a weekday evening to avoid the crowds!

Trust me. If you want that dreamy, glowy look and the colorful night shots you need to plan to start your engagement session about 1-1.5 hours before sunset and stay through blue hour.
This will give you that soft golden light at the start of your session and those vibrant, neon-lit carnival shots once the sun goes down. You basically get two completely different vibes all in one session!

Leave the curated outfit at home and go with an outfit that you feel comfortable enough to move, sit, eat and just exist together. The best creative engagement photos happen when you first feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing.
My Go To Recommendations Include:

If you’re not into throwing darts at a balloon, don’t! Instead, focus on activities that get you excited to go to the fair in the first place.
Maybe that’s…
The goal of this photoshoot is not just “to get photos”, it’s to create a memory of doing something you already enjoy with your partner!

If you’re loving the idea of state fair engagement photos and are based in Michigan but don’t know where to actually go…don’t worry, I’ve got you!

One of my favorite things about being based in Mount Pleasant is how many fun, local fairs and pop-up carnivals are within driving distance.

At the end of the day, your engagement photos shouldn’t feel like something you had to check off your list. They should feel like a night you wish you could go back to. If a state fair session sounds like your kind of date night, I’m already picturing the cotton candy, endless giggles going down the slide and all of the photos that come with it.
