Some engagement sessions just feel like they belong in a movie.
Not the cheesy Hallmark kind—but the “run through the field yelling it’s no use, Jo!” kind.
This was one of those.
On a sweltering 85-degree June day (the kind that makes your hair stick to your neck before you even get out of the car), we kicked things off at Cascade Peace Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Beautiful spot, don’t get me wrong—but after a few bug battles and squinting at a forest that felt a little too shaded, we pivoted.
Maddy and I literally pulled up a map and started scouting in real time.
The goal? A big, open field that screamed golden hour and looked like it had a story to tell.
Fifteen minutes later, we struck gold.
If you’re the kind of couple that wants to show up, laugh too hard, sweat a little, and run through a field like human airplanes—I’m your girl.
Maddy and Calen weren’t trying to fake anything. They just wanted to feel like themselves. And that’s what made this session so fun to shoot. They trusted the process, rolled with the buggy punches, and even fully committed to my “pretend you’re airplanes” prompt. (Spoiler: the photos are ridiculously good.)
So here’s my take:
The best engagement photos aren’t about looking perfect.
They’re about capturing what your love feels like—sticky heat, goofy laughter, tangled hands and all.
Thinking about taking your Grand Rapids engagement photos at Cascade Peace Park? Here’s what to know:
Just be prepared for a few bugs if it’s a summer session—and maybe keep a backup plan (or field) in your back pocket.
That second location? A total wildcard find.
Maddy and I spotted it on a map and said, “That one. That’s the one.”
We rolled up and the sun was exactly where we wanted it—setting behind the field, lighting everything up like it knew we were coming. The grass was tall, the colors were warm, and it gave major cinematic engagement photo energy.
Note: This field is a private property that I have exclusive access to. I’m keeping the exact location off the internet at the owner’s request—but if you book with me, it’s absolutely on the table.
You don’t need to wear matching outfits or bring props that feel like homework.
Here’s what actually helps create that dreamy, cinematic vibe:
If you’re looking for engagement picture inspo that feels like a slice of your life—this is your sign to go off-script.
This session reminded me why I love being a Michigan engagement photographer.
It’s not just about checking a box before your wedding. It’s about freezing the weird, wonderful season that is being engaged. You’re figuring stuff out, planning a future, and also sweating in a field somewhere while your fiancé makes airplane arms toward the horizon.
And when I get to collaborate with couples like Maddy and Calen—ones who say “sure, why not?” and mean it—it turns into something way more than photos.
Whether you’re newly engaged or just looking for a reason to run through a field with your person, I’d love to help you plan a session that actually feels like you.Let’s ditch the awkward poses and make something fun, honest, and cinematic.
