A Meaningful Backyard Wedding in Grand Haven, MI

A love-first, plan-later kind of day. There’s something quietly powerful about a wedding that doesn’t follow the rules. No guest list spreadsheets. No year-long planning timelines. Just the people you love, a space that feels like home, and a whole lot of heart. That was the vibe for Sierra and Andrew’s backyard wedding in Grand Haven—a reminder of how to have a backyard wedding that’s meaningful, no matter the size or timeline.

Hey there, I’m Gabrielle – a Michigan-based documentary wedding and elopement photographer

And I believe in doing things your way. I specialize in small, heartfelt celebrations that lean more into emotion than tradition—and I show up with my camera (and my whole heart) to capture what matters most. If this is your first time here, welcome. I’m so glad you found this story. Read more about me, here!

A Small Backyard Wedding Rooted in Love

Originally, this wedding was set to happen much later—but when Sierra’s grandfather received an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, the timeline shifted. Making sure he could be there to witness the day became the priority. So she called Malori, her wedding planner, and within days, they brought her wedding to life in Malori’s in-laws’ backyard. It was breezy, warm, and beautiful in that perfectly Michigan-in-May kind of way.

Her grandfather was a central part of the day—his presence felt in every moment. From the ceremony under the trees to a touching first dance, you could feel the emotion ripple through the crowd. It wasn’t just a wedding; it was a reminder of how powerful it is to show up for the people you love.

About thirty people gathered in the backyard, tucked beneath the trees, to watch Sierra and Andrew say their vows. The ceremony was sweet and simple—right next to the house, under a tree that felt like it had been waiting just for them.

Later, Sierra shared a first dance with her grandpa that left pretty much everyone teary-eyed.

The night ended by a cozy bonfire, karaoke mic in hand, singing like no one was listening (and definitely off-key). It was heartfelt, a little chaotic, and everything a small backyard wedding should be—intimate, present, and full of love.

Why Backyard Weddings Are So Meaningful

There’s a reason backyard weddings hold a special place in my heart. When you strip away the pressure of making things look a certain way, you make space for everything to feel a certain way.

Instead of fixating on centerpieces or timelines, you’re present.

You’re laughing with your cousins on the porch swing.

You’re slow dancing in the driveway.

Or sneaking off to a quiet corner of the yard just to breathe it all in.

How to Plan a Backyard Wedding (Without Losing the Fun)

Backyard weddings may look effortless, but there’s still a bit of planning that makes the day run smoother. Here are a few quick tips if you’re planning your own backyard wedding:

  • Create a mini backyard wedding checklist. Think: seating, shade/rain cover, food setup, bathrooms (rented or indoor access), and parking.
  • Think about light. Where will the sun be at ceremony time? What corner of the yard catches the golden hour best?
  • Keep the schedule loose. Build in buffer time for hugs, solo moments, or last-minute karaoke & dance parties.
  • Embrace simple. Simple backyard weddings can be just as beautiful. Candles, string lights, a few chairs, and the right people are all you really need.

Planning a backyard wedding reception? Focus on comfort and joy. Fire pits, cozy blankets, picnic tables, and a good speaker can go a long way. At the end of the day, how to have a backyard wedding that is meaningful comes down to choosing presence over perfection and people over pressure.

But What About the Downsides to a Backyard Wedding?

I’m all about keeping it real around here, so let’s talk about the not-so-glamorous side of backyard weddings.

You might need to rent extra chairs, bring in bathrooms, or have a solid clean-up plan for the end of the night. There are things like weather, neighbors, and sound ordinances to think about. It’s not always easy. But if you’re okay trading fancy for familiar—perfection for presence—it can be one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate.
